Freedom, or liberty, may mean the same thing to the man in the street, but there is a subtle difference. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, prophet of the French Revolution, talked of freedom. His contemporary, the less well-known English thinker, Adam Ferguson, spoke of liberty.
