G'Nut Oil, Sugar Decline; Precious Metals Look Up

An easy trend continued in groundnut oil, while most of the other edible oils ruled easy-to-steady at the wholesale oils and oilseeds market here yesterday. Imported palmolein ruled overall steady.

In the futures market, the December '98 contract opened lower and declined further towards closing.

Groundnut oil eased further by Rs 2 at Rs 608 per 10 kg. In other oils, castor oil commercial and BSS qualities declined by Rs 4 each to Rs 433 and Rs 445 per 10 kg, respectively. Linseed oil and copra oil white improved by Rs 5 each to Rs 470 and Rs 545 per 10 kg, respectively.

Soya oil refined and sunflower oil expeller advanced by Rs 5 and Rs 8 to Rs 400 and Rs 430 per 10 kg, respectively, while Karanji oil firmed up by Rs 5 to Rs 238 per 10 kg. Imported palmolein was

nominally quoted at Rs 385 per 10 kg.

In the futures section, the December contract declined to close at Rs 1,644 a quintal.

In oilseeds, while castorseeds Madras and Maharashtra dipped further by Rs 20 each to Rs 1,982 and Rs 1,976 per quintal, all other oilseeds ruled overall steady.

Sugar: A steady-to-subdued trend continued in sugar prices yesterday. Both the grades of sugar ruled easy on dull demand.

Sugar S-30 ruled overall steady and were nominally quoted at Rs 1,455/1,480 a quintal, while sugar M-30 ruled subdued at Rs 1,465/1,540 a quintal.

Meanwhile, sugar for the check-post deliveries were quoted higher at Rs 1,427/1,440 a quintal for S-30 and Rs 1,442/1,462 a quintal for M-30.

Non-ferrous metals: An easy-to-steady trend continued in non-ferrous metals yesterday. In the scraps section, copper heavy scraps declined further by 50 paise to Rs 100, while copper utensils, brass utensils and brass sheet cuttings eased by 25 paise each to Rs 91, Rs 84 and Rs 85.75 a kg, respectively. Meanwhile, aluminium utensils were nominally quoted at Rs 63.50 a kg.

In virgin metals, copper wirebar eased further by 50 paise at Rs 114.50 a kg. Meanwhile, all the other metals were nominally quoted as under: aluminium ingots Rs 86, zinc slabs Rs 77.50, lead ingots Rs 45.50, tin slabs Rs 384 and nickel cathodes Rs 251 a kg, respectively.

Bullion: A firm-to-upward trend was noticed in both the precious metals in the local bullion market yesterday.

In white metals, silver .999 and .916 improved by Rs 70 and Rs 50 to Rs 7775 and Rs 7645 a kg respectively on firm overseas advices coupled with moderate industrial demand in the local market. Delhi advices indicated moderate trend. In yellow metals, standard gold and 22-carat gold firmed by Rs 30 each to Rs 4,360 and Rs 4,035 per 10 grams, respectively. Gold biscuit prices also advanced by Rs 500 at Rs 51,500 per piece.
