A firm trend was noticed in groundnut oil yesterday on restricted supplies coupled with low demand at improved levels. Most of the other edible oils ruled easy-to-subdued at the wholesale oils and oilseeds market, Turbhe, Navi Mumbai yesterday.
In the futures market, the December '98 contract commenced trading yesterday.
Groundnut oil zoomed up by Rs 12 at Rs 517 per 10 kg on negligible inflow. Arrivals were placed around 80 tonne a day.

In other oils, castor oil commercial and BSS qualities firmed up further by Rs 2 each to Rs 430 and Rs 442 per 10 kg respectively. Linseed oil and copra oil white shot up by Rs 10 each to Rs 440 and Rs 460 per 10 kg respectively. Ricebran oil and soya oil refined improved by Rs 4 and Rs 3 to Rs 232 and Rs 378 per 10 kg respectively.
Sunflower oil expeller improved by Rs 5 to Rs 415 per 10 kg. Imported palmolein firmed up by Rs 3 at Rs 355 per 10 kg.
In the futures section, the December `98 contract opened at Rs 1,791 but declined to close at Rs 1772.50 a quintal.
In oilseeds, castorseeds Madras and Maharashtra qualities improved further by Rs 10 each to Rs 1968 and Rs 1962 a quintal respectively.
Sugar: A subdued-to-easy trend was noticed in prices yesterday.
Sugar S-30 grade eased to Rs 1475/1500 a quintal against its previous level of Rs 1478/1500. Similarly, sugar M-30 declined to Rs 1480/1540 a quintal against its previous level of Rs 1505/1535 on dull offtake.
Meanwhile, sugar for the checkpost deliveries were quoted lower at Rs 1450/1465 a quintal for the S-30 grade and Rs 1470/1490 a quintal for the M-30 grade.
Non-ferrous metals: A steady-to-easy trend was noticed in the local non-ferrous metals market yesterday.
In virgin metals, zinc slabs eased by 50 paise at Rs 81.50 a kg on reduced industrial demand. All the other metals ruled overall steady, and were nominally quoted as under : copper wirebar Rs 126, aluminium ingots Rs 85.50, lead ingots Rs 45.50, tin slabs Rs 384 and nickel cathodes Rs 260 a kg respectively.
In the scraps section, all the metals ruled overall steady, and were nominally quoted as under : copper heavy scraps Rs 110, copper utensils Rs 96, brass utensils Rs 84, brass sheetcuttings Rs 87.50 and aluminium utensils Rs 63 a kg respectively.
Bullion: A weak trend was noticed in the local bullion market yesterday.
In white metals, silver .999 and .916 declined by Rs 65 and Rs 75 to Rs 8,155 and Rs 8,035 a kg respectively.
In yellow metals, both standard gold and 22 carat gold eased by Rs 15 each to Rs 4200 and Rs 3885 per 10 grams respectively. Gold biscuit prices dipped by Rs 250 at Rs 49,350 per piece of bar.
