Groundnut Oil Declines, Precious Metals Spurt

With the exception of Satyam Computers and RIL, pivotals opened firm but closed dull on the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) yesterday.

"After opening strong, stocks drifted downwards since it is still not clear as to which party would emerge as the winner", said a CSE dealer. The CSE-40 dipped by 6.51 points to close at 2,253.96 points. The index fluctuated between a high and low of 2,290.17 and 2,246.93 points.

Satyam Computer posted strong gains to close at Rs 1,257.60 against the last close of Rs 1,195.30. It touched a high of Rs 1,290.90 and a low of Rs 1,199. RIL touched a high of Rs 247.30 and a low of Rs 233.60 before closing at Rs 235.90. Global Tele-Systems, too, was firm and closed at Rs 519.60 after a high of Rs 540.50 and a low of Rs 516.10. Tata Tea closed at Rs 605.50 after a high of Rs 617 and a low of Rs 589. ITC saw a high of Rs 835 and a low of Rs 791 at Rs 805.40. Hindustan Lever closed at Rs 2,500.50 and touched a high of Rs 2,534 in mid-day trading.

The highlight of trading was continued keen support to Satyam Computer which gained perceptible ground at Rs 1,257.60. The turnover was restricted and undertone uncertain.
