Groundnut Oil Up Rs 2; Sugar, Metals Steady

Groundnut oil looked up by Rs 2 at Rs 352 per 10 kg on modest demand coupled with subdued arrivals. The trading volume was modest and arrivals were nominal from overseas centres yesterday.

Mowra oil firmed up by Rs 5 to Rs 275 per 10 kg on better industrial demand against modest arrivals. Castor oil commercial and BSS qualities improved further by Rs 3 each to Rs 402 and Rs 414 per 10 kg, respectively, on better industrial offtake. Imported RBD palmolein looked up by Rs 3 at Rs 210 per 10 kg on reduced supplies of imported oil coupled with better industrial interest. While imported soybean oil refined ruled steady at Rs 228 per 10 kg.

Castorseeds June-2000 contract opened at Rs 1,860 a quintal and firmed to Rs 1,874. It declined to close at Rs 1,858 a quintal on speculative movements. September contract remained untraded.

Castor oil international contract April-2000 opened Rs 3 up at Rs 414 per 10 kg and ruled quiet Castorseeds looked up further by Rs 15 to Rs 1,860 a quintal on tight supplies and modest offtake.

Meanwhile, all the other oilseeds ruled overall steady.

Sugar : An easy to steady trend continued at Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. Small-grade sugar (S-30) held overall steady at the previous level of Rs 1,430/1,465 a quintal on easy arrivals coupled with dull demand. Medium-grade (M-30) eased further to Rs 1,463-1,530 a quintal against its previous level of Rs 1,468/1,545 on dull offtake against modest availability of ready stock. Sugar prices for check-post were quoted higher at Rs 1,413/1,493 a quintal for S-30 grade and Rs 1,410/1,445 for the medium grade.

Non-ferrous metals: A firm to steady trend witnessed in the non-ferrous metals.

In scraps, copper heavy scraps, copper utensils and brass utensils improved by Re 1 each to Rs 118.00, Rs 101 and Rs 91 a kg, respectively, on improved industrial demand and restricted supplies of imported materials. Brass sheetcuttings firmed up by 50 paise at Rs 97.50 a kg. Meanwhile, aluminium utensils were traded at Rs 68.50 a kg.

In virgins, copper wirebar and nickel cathodes improved by Rs 1.25 and Rs 3 to Rs 125.00 and Rs 593 a kg, respectively, on short supplies of imported materials and better industrial offtake. Tin slabs eased by Rs 3 at Rs 372 a kg. Other metals were quoted as under : aluminium ingots Rs 90.00, zinc slabs Rs 89.00 and lead ingots Rs 35 a kg.

Bullion : A weak trend witnessed in precious metals prices. Silver .999 and .916 declined by Rs 20 and Rs 30 to Rs 7900 and Rs 7770 a kg, respectively. Delhi advices indicated a moderate trend.

Standard gold and 22 carat gold prices eased by Rs 15 each to Rs 4,385 and Rs 4,055 per 10 gm, respectively. Gold biscuits lost Rs 200 at Rs 51,400 per piece
