Recently there was a news item to the effect that a legislation is being contemplated to make it compulsory for children to support aged parents (in Himachal Pradesh). Another legislation, recently introduced in Parliament, was for giving a compulsory weekly off for housewives. I am presenting some issues relating to the practical enforcement of such laws.
Will a wife will complain against the husband for not allowing a weekly off?
Will there be a requirement for each household to declare the day of the weekly off (as in factories)?

Are we going to have an inspector of households (like factories)?
Will we have a raid raj, with inspectors in each house to verify if the weekly off is being observed?
Will we set up special courts to handle all such cases?
It is heartening to note that this will contribute towards generation of employment more policemen, lawyers, judges, and more juicy articles for journalists. The government must be very happy, since its poll promises to create more employment will be fulfilled. It is possible that the finance minister may be less happy, since he has to find the resources to pay all these newly employed people, keep the fiscal deficit to 3 per cent of the GDP.
I look forward to more such entertaining legislation.
