The value of assets held by individual investors in mutual funds increased to Rs 5.64 trillion in May, 2015 from Rs 4.15 trillion a year ago - an absolute increase of 35.8 per cent. This was higher than the 24 per cent growth in overall assets for the sector during this time. Further, the growth is higher than that witnessed in institutional assets. Individual investors (retail and HNIs) primarily hold equity-oriented schemes, while institutions hold liquid and debt-oriented schemes. About 58 per cent of individual investor assets are held in equity schemes. Of the overall equity assets of the MF sector, almost 85 per cent belong to individual investors.
