The Tripura unit of the Janata Dal yesterday said it would think twice before forming an alliance with the ruling Left Front in the state alleging that the Front had completely betrayed the aspirations of the people during the last four years of rule.

The newly-elected president of the state JD, Arun Bhowmik told newsmen here yesterday that the Left front has cheated the Dal and the people, particularly the weaker and backward sections. The Dals central committee, he said, would not form any alliance with the Left front in the next Assembly elections due in March 98. Bhowmik alleged that there were thousands of vacancies in different government departments and the government had not taken any initiative to fill them up the posts, particularly those meant for the backward people.

The Dal would also soon launch a statewide movement in support of seven demands. Bhoumik said during the first phase of the agitation dal workers would stage demonstration at the block and panchayat levels demanding permanent solution to the insurgency problem, maintain communal harmony, priority in the development of hilly areas and more work for the rural people.
