Jeans giant Levi Strauss & Co. said it plans to cut 1,000 jobs one-fifth of its US white-collar work force over the next year as part of an effort to trim overhead costs by about $80 million a year. The cuts will fall on 20 per cent of the 5,000 salaried jobs in the US business of privately-owned Levi Strauss, the worlds biggest clothing maker. The San Francisco-based companys US business employs 26,000 people.
