The second round of computerisation of the Department of Company Affairs in 2000-2001 will fetch the department additional revenue of about Rs 400 crore, according to estimates .
In a step towards electronic corporate governance, the department has already started its second phase of computerisation. It has prepared a five-year information technology (IT) plan.
The department has collaborated with the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) to bring out important corporate statistics on CD-ROM and in a book form from 1998-99 onwards.

A company directory CD-ROM containing details of 520,000 companies registered as on March 31, 1999, was released in October 1999. The department plans to release updated compact discs at the beginning of every financial year.
After a business process re-engineering study was conducted at the registrar of companies offices by a National Informatics Centre study team, the registrars have been linked with the department through NICNET.
Computerisation has been extended to other departments by setting up computer centres at Shastri Bhawan and Paryavaran Bhawan in New Delhi. Computerisation had begun with collection and processing of data for the Quinquennial Directory of Joint Stock Companies, 1980.
To achieve effective public services, the department has opened a computerised information and facilitation counter. The counter functions at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi to handle grievances and provide information. Between April 1, 1999 and December 31, 1999, 19,482 persons approached the counter with various complaints.
To enhance efficiency by progressive use of information technology, it has also launched a website www.nic.in/dca.
