Non-Ferrous Metals Ease; Bullion Turns Dearer

Groundnut oil yesterday firmed up by Rs 3 to Rs 360 per 10 kg on better demand coupled with modest arrivals of stock. Trading volume was modest and arrivals from overseas centres nominal.

Copra oil white and linseed oil improved by Rs 5 each to Rs 405 and Rs 270 per 10 kg, respectively, on better industrial demand coupled with tight inflows. Castor oil commercial and BSS qualities softened by Rs 2 each to Rs 394 and Rs 406 per 10 kg, respectively.

Imported RBD palmolein looked up by Rs 2 at Rs 212 per 10 kg on better industrial enquires, while imported soy oil refined eased by Rs 3 at Rs 225 per 10 kg.

Castorseeds June-2000 contract opened steady at Rs 1,825 a quintal. It eased and closed at Rs 1,814 on speculative movements. September contract went untraded.

Castor oil international contract April-2000 opened Rs 2 lower at Rs 407 per 10 kg and ruled quiet at the same level towards close.

Castorseeds softened by Rs 10 to Rs 1,820 per quintal on dull industrial demand.

All other oilseeds ruled overall steady on modest industrial enquires against normal availability.

Sugar: An easy-to-subdued trend was witnessed at the wholesale sugar market here.

Small-grade sugar (S-30) declined to Rs 1,378-1,415 a quintal against the previous level of Rs 1,380-1,415 on easy arrivals from upcountry centres and mills.

Medium-grade (M-30) eased to Rs 1,430-1,475 a quintal against its previous level of Rs 1,424-1,485 on dull offtake against modest availability of ready stock.

Sugar prices for check-post were quoted higher at Rs 1,365-1,385 a quintal for S-30 grade and Rs 1,405-1,440 for the medium

Non-ferrous metals: On yesterday scraps ruled dull while virgins ruled mostly steady. The demand was modest against normal supply. In scraps, copper heavy, copper utensils, brass utensils and brass sheetcuttings eased by 50 paise each to Rs 117.50, Rs 100.50, Rs 90.50 and Rs 96.50 a kg, respectively. Aluminium utensils ruled overall steady at Rs 69 a kg on normal industrial enquiries.

In virgins, copper wirebar eased by 50 paise at Rs 125.50 a kg, while zinc slabs looked up by 25 paise at Rs 89.25 a kg.

All the other metals held overall steady and were nominally quoted as under: aluminium ingots Rs 90.50, lead ingots Rs 35, tin slabs Rs 372 and nickel cathodes Rs 608 a kg, respectively.

Bullion: Precious metal prices showed a bullish trend at the local bullion market yesterday.

Silver .999 and .916 firmed up by Rs 15 and Rs 5 to Rs 7,840 and Rs 7,705 a kg, respectively, on firm industrial as well as local offtake and strong overseas advices.

Standard gold and 22-carat gold prices firmed up by Rs 10 each to Rs 4,350 and Rs 4,025 per 10 gm, respectively. Gold biscuits prices held steady at Rs 50,800 per piece.
