Pivotals See Moderate Gains

Pivotals recovered moderately at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday on speculative support for squaring up positions on the last day of the current settlement. However, the market failed to close at the days best levels on profittaking at higher levels.

74 securities had hit their price bands today, the NSE said in a press release. The NSE-50 index opened at 995.70, touched a high of 1016.80 and closed at 999.10, with a rise of 3.30 points over the previous close of 995.80. The dollar NSE-50 (Defty) opened at 865.40, scaled to a high of 883.50 and closed at 867.80, showing a gain of 1.35 points over the previous close of 866.45. The Midcap opened at 1129.00, gradually rose to a high of 1149.65 but trimmed the gains on profittaking to close at 1130.75, with a modest rise of 1.75 points over the previous close of 1129.00.

The total turnover was Rs 1,403.10 crore from 587.81 lakh shares and in 1,84,356 trades. Debentures traded value was Rs 247.57 lakh. The four scrips in the limelight were ITC with a turnover of Rs 554.62 crore, Tata Tea with Rs 186.00 crore, SBI new with Rs 119.04 crore and Reliance Industries with Rs 96.65 crore.

Among the other best traded securities were Castrol (Rs 51.35 cr), MTNL (Rs 43.87 cr), Hind Lever (Rs 39.93 cr), Tisco (Rs 29.06 cr), L&T (Rs 24.97 cr), Telco (Rs 22.90 cr), Glaxo (Rs 19.38 cr), BPL (Rs 18.47 cr), Corp Bank (Rs 17.71 cr), ACC (Rs 17.27 cr), Bhel (Rs 11.59 cr), Colgate (Rs 8.90 cr), Bajaj Auto (Rs 6.98 cr), ICICI (Rs 6.94 cr), Infosys Tech (Rs 4.94 cr), Rel Petro (Rs 4.76 cr), IPCL (Rs 4.48 cr), Ranbaxy (Rs 3.90 cr), EIH (Rs 3.85 cr) and Rel Capital (Rs 3.85 cr).

The top five Nifty gainers were MTNL which closed at Rs 221.20 (Rs 214.50), Thermax Rs 168.95 (Rs 163.90), SBI new Rs 235.05 (Rs 229.40), Cochin Refn Rs 165.60 (Rs 161.95) and ITC Rs 590.65 (Rs 579.30).

Meanwhile, a firm trend was witnessed at the Over the Counter Exchange of India,(OTCEI) as equity prices improved on investor support and ended with moderate gains. The OTCEI composite index opened at 108.46 and gradually improved to a high of 110.41 and finally settled at 110.39, showing a rise of 1.70 points over the previous close of 108.69. The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 32.23 lakh involving 40,450 shares and debentures.
