Sunflower, Copra Oils Decline; Sugar Mixed

Groundnut oil remained steady at Rs 345 per 10 kg yesterday on subdued demand. The trading volume was thin. Sunflower oil expeller and copra oil white eased by Rs 5 and Rs 3 to Rs 215 and Rs 418 per 10 kg, respectively, on sluggish industrial demand against better arrivals. Castor oil commercial and BSS qualities also eased by Re 1 each to Rs 400 and Rs 412 per 10 kg, respectively.

Imported RBD palmolein firmed up by Rs 3 to Rs 208 per 10 kg on modest industrial demand.

Castorseeds June 2000 contract opened Rs 4 lower at Rs 1,862 a quintal and ruled between Rs 1,873 and Rs 1,858 before closing to Rs 1,864 a quintal. Castor oil international contract April 2000 ruled steady at Rs 410 per 10 kg.

Castorseeds softened by Rs 5 to Rs 1,850 a quintal on easy supplies and subdued offtake. Nigerseeds and kardiseeds eased by Rs 25 each to Rs 2,275 and Rs 1,075 a quintal, respectively.

Sugar: A mixed trend prevailed with small grades ruling subdued while medium grades held firm. The demand was modest.

Small-grade sugar (S-30) declined to Rs 1,435/1,471 a quintal against its previous level of Rs 1,430/1,480 on improved arrivals from upcountry centres and dull demand.

Medium-grade (M-30) firmed up to Rs 1,470/1,570 a quintal (Rs 1,465/1,565) on better offtake. Consumer demand was dull against a normal supply position.

Sugar for check-post deliveries was quoted higher at Rs 1,408/1,425 a quintal for S-30 grade and Rs 1,440/1,455 for medium grade.

Non-ferrous metals: A steady trend was witnessed in non-ferrous metals with scraps ruling firm while virgins held steady. Demand was subdued.

In scraps, copper heavy eased by 50 paise at Rs 117 a kg on dull industrial demand and easy availability of ready stock. Others ruled steady and quoted as under: copper utensils Rs 100, brass utensils Rs 90, brass sheetcuttings Rs 97 and aluminium utensils Rs 68.50 a kg, respectively.

All virgins were steady and quoted as under: copper wirebar Rs 122.75, aluminium ingots Rs 90, zinc slabs Rs 89.50, lead ingots Rs 35, tin slabs Rs 375 and nickel cathodes Rs 590 a kg, respectively.

Bullion: A weak trend was witnessed. Silver .999 and .916 declined by Rs 40 and Rs 45 to Rs 7,860 and Rs 7,730 a kg, respectively, on dull overseas advices and modest demand. Standard gold and 22-carat gold prices eased by Rs 10 each to Rs 4,370 and Rs 4,040 per 10 gram respectively on dull overseas advices and modest local offtake. Gold biscuits lost Rs 100 at Rs 51,200 per piece.
