The government is planning to introduce the Charted Surveyors Bill in the next Parliament session.

"The Bill is in the conceptual stage and is likely to be put up in Parliament soon for discussion," minister of state for science and technology Bachi Singh Rawat said.

The proposed Bill will organise the profession of surveyors and institutionalise it in a legal framework, he said adding that with the growing demand for surveying and with the growing participation of private professionals in the field of surveying, a proper check on their quality and accuracy is required.

While addressing the inaugural session of a seminar, `Surveying and Information Technology at the Dawn of the Millennium', organised by the Institution of Surveyors, Rawat said, information technology (IT) has invaded every walk of life and surveying is not an exception.

"Unless we strengthen this profession as per modern requirement it will not be able to compete with the global challenge," he said.

According to the Commonwealth Association of Surveying in Land Economy (CASLE) president K S Kharb there is a large gap between demand and supply as far as trained professionals in this field are concerned.

The present number of surveyors in India is about 2,500 while the number required is about 40,000. Every year 40 students pass out of the Institution of Surveyors which hardly satisfies the demand.

Internationally for every one surveyor there are three civil engineers, while in India the ratio is one surveyor for six hundred engineers, Kharb said.

Speaking about the technological revolution in the field of surveying, Surveyor-General of India Lieutenant-General A K Ahuja said, "In keeping with the rapid developments taking place in the country, the surveying profession has adopted modern technologies instead of the cumbersome manual techniques."
