Synopsys Eyes Tie-Ups With Universities

Synopsys India, part of the US-based $667-million Synopsys Inc, plans to tie-up with leading Indian universities and Indian Institute of Technology to carry out research and nurture talent in India.

As part of the company's university relations programme, it will provide the universities with electronic design automation (EDA) software at discounted prices, Sanjay Nayak, managing director, Synopsys India said on Monday. The company will also fund professors for carrying out research on certain key technologies. Following the merger of world's leading EDA vendor Viewlogic Systems with Synopsys Inc recently, the Bangalore operations of both companies have been merged and a single 100 per cent export oriented software technology park has been opened, a release said.

Synopsys has already invested about $4 million in its centre. It plans to double its workforce to 120 in two years, the release added. Synopsys Inc's senior vice-president of simulation tools group Dave Burrow said, as the US had freezed the number of work permits given to Indian professionals for the second successive year companies like Synopsys had decided to expand its operations in the country.

The chief operating officer of the company Chi-Foon Chan said Synopsys had decided to build a centre of excellence in each country which would carry specific activities. In India, the centre would work on digital communication and telecom networking.
