Telstra VComm - a very small aperture terminal (V-Sat) joint venture between Australian telecom carrier Telstra, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) and IL&FS - has bagged a contract to link up 40 labs of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). To be executed over two years, the order is worth around Rs 15 crore.
The first phase of the contract, which envisages linking up 15 labs of the premier science research outfit, will be completed around January next year, Abu Shafquat, managing director of Telstra VComm told Business Standard.
The first phase of the World Bank funded project will be worth some Rs 4.5 crore.

The network for CSIR will provide high-speed communications between 15 remote locations of CSIR for electronic mail, remote computing, database and multimedia web-page access, toll quality voice and fax transmission, video broadcast and conferencing.
For the CSIR contract, Telstra VComm will use equipment from US-based Hughes Network Systems. The network will use V-Sats in a meshed configuration with a central hub that will be operated and managed by Telstra VComm. The hub will be situated at CSIR headquarters in Delhi.
