Theatre and Poetry

An evening with the poet: Impresario Asia presents Nashist featuring Gauhar Raza. The Urdu poet and documentary film maker will be reciting his poetry, followed by an interactive session with the audience.

Colloquial comedies: Bhavya Cultural Society and The River groups present two comedies in Hindi, both written by Jayvardhan. Urgent Meeting, directed by Aman, will be followed by Hi Handsome, which is directed by Sanjay Popli.

Moulding into meaning: Bhavna Kakar presents "Everything Ends and Everything Matters", an Exhibition of Artworks by Anindita Dutta.Her sculptures and performances are mirror images of her restless energy as she creates "living sculptures" with her bare hands from the primeval material that connotes our genesis. She slathers every surface that she interacts with— from clothes, objects and living beings — with layers of clay that build up through the duration of her performance.

Three perspectives: "Trace(s)", a photography exhibition by Ioulia Chvetsova, Marie Langlest and Alan Rubin, presents each photographer's unique perspective. Franco-Russian photographer, Ioulia Chvetsova specialises in travel photography and in this series of photographs, she combines images taken in India and Russia. French photographer Marie Langlest combines photographs as diptychs or triptychs and presents her work as visual haiku poems. She photographs every day, putting images together to make her own kind of haiku, telling her story with memories and feeling. American photographer Alan Rubin is a street photographer who began photographing in the streets in the late 1990’s in New York City. In recent years, he has been using his camera to explore culture and the environment, first in Africa and currently in India.

Reflections on Death: A new show ‘Memento Mori’ will include works by Clare Arni, Suruchi Choksi, Samit Das, Payal Kapadia, Soghra Khurasani, Saju Kunhan, Zishaan Akbar Latif, Tanmoy Samanta, Katsushi Goto and Vishwa Shroff. The exhibition touches upon the mortality, brevity and fragility of human life. Each of the artists studies the phenomenon of death in personal and collective contexts.

Music

Drum and Beat: Rudimental, a UK based drum and beat group will perform in the city as part of the Vh1 Supersonic Club Nights. The group, whose music combines trumpet and guitar solos with electronic beats, saw its album Home debut at number 1 in the UK and has won several awards and nominations.

Chamber music: The SOI Chamber Ensemble, which includes resident members of the Symphony Orchestra of India, will be performing alongside Hungarian pianist Balasz Fulei. Fulei had previously played in India with the Kodaly Quartet. The show will be led by newly-appointed resident conductor for the SOI, Piotr Borkowski.

Ansh Theatre Festival: As part of the Ansh Theatre Festival, watch Karodo Mein Ek, a Hindi play about a father-son relationship. Written and directed by Makarand Deshpande, it stars Deshpande himself, Nivedita Bhattcharya, Yashpal Sharma, Ayesha Raza and others. For a schedule of the festival, check www.ncpamumbai.com.

Songs of love: Les Chansons d’Amour (Love Songs) by Christophe Honoré is an homage to the French movie musical. Several extremely romantic Parisian characters who find it hard to convey their feelings to one another in everyday situations, use musical numbers instead to express themselves emotionally.

Picking pockets: Directed by Robert Bresson, Pickpocket tells the story of Michel who attempts to pick pockets as a pastime, and is promptly arrested. On being released, however, his mother dies, and he goes back to pickpocketing because he feels that is the only way he can express himself.

Art

Inside the young artist’s mind: As part of its young talent program, Alliance Francaise de Bangalore will show a collection of works by emerging artist Deepak K. The artist, who is studying painting at the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, depicts a surrealistic world both in terms of his vision and colour.  The exhibition is titled ‘Inhuman’.

Women at war: Fate Breakers, a photography exhibition by Pascal Mannaerts, depicts the story of some Indian women who have fought society to empower themselves and others. The show has been curated by the Jean-Philippe Bottin.

Charandas Chor: Watch the Jagriti troupe’s production of Charandas Thief, the play by Habib Tanvir about a petty thief who is also a man of principles and integrity. This ultimately becomes his ruin.
