India’s lesser known historic temple town of Mandsaur, in Malwa region, is looking for industrial upliftment. Industries here have demanded an environment that should be conducive to the business community and also attract investment in agriculture & tourism. The industrial community in Mandsaur raised concerns over certain rules and provisions of Acts that hamper progress of the existing industry.

Local leaders including MLA, Yashpal Singh Sisodia and Member of Parliament, Sudhir Gupta also echoed industrialists’ demands and ensured they would make efforts to attract more investment in the district and Mandsaur town.

“Age-old rules and certain new rules have restricted industries from competing in the market and flourishing in Mandsaur district, which otherwise has immense potential,” said S M Jain, President of Mandsaur Industrial Association. Jain further said, “Labour related laws need to be made simpler. Further, inordinate delays in land acquisition, high rate of mandi tax, biodiversity levy, are some factors that hamper growth, particularly for MSMEs.”

“Mandsaur, only few years ago, was known for producing best steel products that provided jobs to many but it could not withstand the fierce competition of the market,” said N S Sipani, Chairman, Shivana Area Partnership Sanstha.

Sipani also demanded that Shivna river be conserved, cleaned and protected. The President of Nagar Palika Parishad, Kusum Gupta seconded his call for protection of Shivna.

The industrial community is looking into new efforts to attract investment in areas of food processing, spice processing, dairy products, plastic industry, agro-based industry, floriculture and horticulture.

Speaking on this occasion, Member of Parliament, Sudhir Gupta expressed his concern over shrinking of opium cultivation area due to tough norms of Narcotics rules and provisions. He said, “We are not encouraging opium cultivation but we should also not forget the fact that poppy seed comes from opium plant which can fetch more returns to farm sector.“ Mandsaur is an ideal location for logistics as it has better connectivity to the western India.
