Powerlifter Sudhir won India's historic first-ever gold in the sport while Murali Sreeshankar won India's first-ever medal (silver) with an attempt of 8:08 Metres in the Men's Long Jump event. These two athletes highlighted India's seventh day at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Sudhir created history by winning India's first gold in Powerlifting. India performed well in mostly all events. Sudhir lifted a total of 212 kgs and created a Games record by securing 134.5 points.
However, In total India could bag only two medals on Day 7 to add to its tally of 18 that it had won on Day 6.
Boxing: Seven medals secured
Four Indian boxers in the fray on day seven performed exceptionally well to win their respective bouts and march to the semi-finals. Added to the three semi-finalists from day 6, India have now secured a total of seven medals in boxing, the colour of which is yet to be decided. The boxers winning today were Amit Panghal (Men's 51 kg), Jaismine (Women's 60 kg), Sagar Malik (Men's +92 kg) and Rohit Tokas (Men's 63.5-67kg).
Men’s Hockey: India reach semi-finals
The Indian Men’s Hockey team made its way to the semi-finals and almost secured a top-of-the-pool position after its 4-1 victory over Wales in its last group stage encounter. England, who are in the second position in the pool, would now have to win with a margin of 14 goals or more against Canada in their last group stage game tomorrow to take over India in goal difference.
Success in Badminton, Table Tennis and Squash
The Indian Table Tennis players in both the para event and otherwise impressed all by moving forward in their respective rounds. Two Para-Table Tennis players made it to the semi-final while all the Table Tennis players won their respective Doubles matches to advance to the next round.
In Badminton, Akarshi Kashyap, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya sen alos won their respective games to move to the next round. similar were the results in Squash where Joshana Chinaapa, Anahat Singh, Deepika Palikkal, Saurav Ghosal and Harinderpal Singh won their respective games.
