Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 9 Highlights
Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat, Naveen Kumar and Bhavina Patel won gold medals for India while the nation accumulated three silver and seven bronze medals to make it a total of 14 medals on day nine of the competition. So far this has been the best day for India at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Wrestlers finish with 6 gold and a total of 12 medals
It were the Indian wrestlers once again who were amongst the medals and as the wrestling competition got over, the Indian contingent finished with at least one medal each for every wrestler. In fact, this became the best game ever for Indian Wrestling in the history of the Commonwealth Games s it finished with six gold medals, breaking the five gold medal mark created at Gold Coast 2018.
Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat and Naveen Kumar won gold in Men's 57 kg, Women's 53 kg and Men's 74 kg categories respectively. Apart from them, three other wrestlers, Deepak Nehra, Pooja Gehlot and Pooja Sihag won bronze medals.
India women’s team secures historic cricket medal
The Indian women’s cricket team beat home favourites England in a thrilling last-over encounter to advance to the final and secure first ever Commonwealth Games medal for India in its most popular sport. Chasing 165, set up by the Indian eves, the English women could only muster 160 in their 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana scored a 23-ball fifty while Sneh Rana defended 14 runs in the last over. In the final, India will face Australia.
Historic medals in Athletics
While in other sports it was still expected that India would do well, but the silver medals won by Priyanka Goswami in Women’s 10 km Race Walk and Avinash Sable in Men’s 3000 Metre Steeplechase were unbeliveble.
While it was the first-ever silver in Race Walk for India, Sable broke the Kenyan stronghold as he became the first Non-Kenyan since 1998 to win a Steeple chase medal. He also created a national record and achieved his personal best timing of 8:11:20 seconds
Indian Men's Hockey team into final
The Men's Hockey team did not let the jitters get to it as it got past South Africa 3-2 after conceding a last-minute goal to advance to the final. In the final, it would face Australia who beat England 3-2 in another semi-final.
Another Lawn Bowls medal for India
India added another medal in the Lawn Bowls event as Men’s Fours team competed well against Northern Ireland eventually lost. However, this has been the best ever Lawn Bowls campaign for India. After the Women's Fours team's historic gold, this is the second medal for the country in the sport at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
Four Indian boxers reach Final
Before Sagar, Nitu Ghanghas, Nikhat Zareen and Amit Panghal qualified for the fil in their respective weight categories. Three Indians, Mohd Hussamuddin, Jaismine Lamboria and Rohit Tokas lost on a split decision and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Sharath Kamal marches to the final
Achanta Sharath Kamal had a phenomenal day on the Table as he advanced to the final of both Men's Doubles with Sathiyan Ganasekaran and Mixed Doubles with Sreeja Akula as his partner.
Kamal won his singles match too and has made his way to the Men's Singles semi-final too. Sreeja lost a riveting women's singles semi-final in seven sets against the top seed. She will fight for a bronze medal. Sathiyan has also made it to the Men's Singles semi-final.
