For all the talk about England’s progress under Gareth Southgate, his youthful side have yet to be truly examined in this World Cup but Tuesday’s last 16 opponents Colombia will certainly ask the right questions.

England will try and overcome the weight of the history of knockout heartbreaks in recent past when they face Colombia while the South American outfit will attempt to secure a place in the quarter-finals for the second time in succession.

Full-time report: England scraped through a win against a spirited Colombia in penalties after the 120 minutes of regular and additional time couldn't separate the two teams who played a haphazard game at a break-neck speed with only one goal at either end to show for it. At the end of the penalties in Moscow, England outscored Colombia 4-3, with Eric Dier steering a crisp low shot beyond David Ospina and into the bottom corner. The win takes England to the quarter-finals of the Fifa World Cup in Russia and sends Colombia back home.

England took control of the game and held it for the initial 20 minutes but then Colombia fought their way back into the game. The closest a player came to scoring in the first-half was English captain Harry Kane who couldn't keep his header down. Tempers also fared in the game and in one such instance, Wilmar Barrios was handed over yellow card after the midfielder headbutted Henderson. For all the speed and chances the two teams got, the match remained scoreless in the first half.

England got a penalty in the 54th minute when Carlos Sanchez pulled down Kane inside the box following a corner. The English captain stood over the dead-ball and curled his penalty straight down the centre of the goal, with Ospina diving to his right. Colombia had a wonderful chance to level the game in the 81st minute when Bacca dispossessed Kyle Walker on the half-way line and started a counter-attack. Cuadrado received the ball but blasted his effort over from 18 yards. Colombia did get its goal nearly 12 minutes later, from a familiar source: Yerry Mina. The defender, who had already scored twice in as many matches scored with a towering header from a corner after jumping above Maguire and heading down into the ground. The bounce took the ball above Tripper and in off the crossbar. The game which never saw a lull became even livelier! And although both the teams had plenty of chances in the extra-time and with the scores still tied, the match went to penalties.

Colombia initially got the upper-hand in the penalty shootout when Henderson's spot-kick was saved, but  Mateus Uribe hit the crossbar and Jordan Pickford kept out Bacca's effort to swing the shootout back in England's favour. Eric Dier then stepped up and scored the decisive penalty to win it for England.

England's win means they will play Sweden on Saturday in the quarters for the semi-final spot. Both the teams scraped through their games and have managed to somehow get the draw, although England should have an upper hand over Sweden due to the relatively superior quality of their players among other reasons.

England vs Colombia Line-up

England changed nine of their outfield players as they lost to Belgium in their last group game. Coach Gareth Southgate will know if that was the right policy as he looks to lead England to their first win in the knockout stage of a major tournament since World Cup 2006.

With or without their talented number 10 James Rodriguez, the South American possess plenty of talent and their run to the quarter-finals in Brazil four years ago showed they are capable of something England haven’t managed in 12 years — winning in the knockout stage.

Southgate has all his squad available except for Fabian Delph, who flew back to the UK on Friday for the birth of his third child, with Dele Ali expected to replace Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield after a calf strain saw him sidelined against Panama and Belgium.

John Stones should have no problems playing in defence after he was seen with an ice-bag on his calf after being substituted at halftime against Belgium with Southgate saying that had always been his intention.

Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker will partner Jones in a three-man defence, while Kieran Trippier has adjusted his role well as a wing-back, putting in a good shift in defending and joining the attack build-up.

Jordan Henderson has been operating well in shielding the defence. With the Liverpool defensive midfielder also having improved his passing game, England are creating a lot of chances.

Harry Kane will be England's main danger with the leader of the race for the 2018 Golden Boot looking to add to the five goals he scored in the first two matches.

In attack, he will have the support of Raheem Sterling while attacking midfielders like Ali and Jesse Lingard are good enough to trouble any opposition.

England have shown themselves to be a huge threat from set pieces with six of the eight goals they have scored in Russia scored from dead-ball situations.

Colombia will look to big central defender Yerry Mina and Davinson Sanchez to counteract that threat. The Barcelona stopper has scored two goals himself following set pieces taken by Juan Quintero.

Santiago Arias and Johan Mojica are guarantees at right-back and left-back, while Carlos Sanchez may be picked to play in a midfield of three, alongside Jefferson Lerma.

The 25-year-old Quintero, along with Juan Cuadrado, could find himself tasked with providing Colombia's creative play if James Rodriguez is unfit, with veteran Radamel Falcao leading their attack.

James has been struggling with a muscle problem all through the competition and had to be replaced after just 30 minutes in Colombia's last game against Senegal and his loss would be a major blow to the South Americans.

Hopes are high among the English and even more so with a possible quarter-final against Sweden or Switzerland, but to reach the quarter-finals they need first to get past Colombia ... and 12 years of disappointment.
