IND vs SL 1st Test Highlights: Jadeja's all round show wins it for India

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the match, scoring 175* with the bat and finishing with figures 9/87 with the ball in the game to win the match for his team

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test : Ravindra Jadeja's all-round show in which he scored 175* and took a five-wicket haul in the first innings and four wickets in the second innings, to get a combination of nine wickets for just 87 runs has won India the first match of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, Chandigarh.

With this win, Rohit Sharma's first as a Test captain, India have taken an unassailable lead in the series and would look to win the series 2-0 by winning the Day-Night Test in Bengaluru, starting on March 12, 2022. Thanks to this win, India close in on the fourth position on the World Test Championship Points table as well as Sri Lanka move down to the 3rd position. 

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 3 Highlights

Coming in to bat on Day 3, Sri Lanka were 108-4 with Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalnka at the crease, the Sri Lankans showed some resolve with the pairing adding 53 runs in the morning session before the freefall began. After losing the fifth wicket on 161, the Sri Lankan team was rolled over for 174. Jadeja took five wickets. 

In the second innings, after they were asked to follow on, Sri Lanka again lost three quick wickets and they were reduced to 45-3 before Dahananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews added 49 for the fourth wicket. But a false shot resulted in the dismissal of de Silva and then once again wickets fell in a lurry and Sri Lanka were once again reduced to 121-7 before Niroshan Dickwell played a nice inning of 51* to take Sri Lanka to 178. 

India eventually won the match by an innings and 222 runs. Jadeja took four wickets once again.

From India's point of view, another easy victory is what captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid would be hoping for. but Sri Lanka and their captain Dimuth Karunratne would look to show some resolve as he talked about in the presentation ceremony of the first Test. The game would be a day-night affair and Sri Lanka would want to have Dushmanatha Chameera back in the attack and hope that he and Vishwa Fernando are able to swing the ball alongside Suranga Lakmal. 

 

India could draft in Axar Patel or will they still go with Jayant Yadav is still a matter of thought and we would only come to know in Bengaluru on March 12 when the second India vs Sri Lanka Test begins.

From India's point of view, Ravindra Jadeja's form is definitely a plus as he scored 175 and took nine wickets in the game. But at the same time, Ravichandran Ashwin also did well with both bat and ball, scoring 61 runs and p[kicking six wickets. These two spinners have reassured that India is at the right place as far as its lower-order batting and spin bowling is concerned. 

 

This match also marked the 100th Test for Virat Kohli and though he missed out to make it a big one for himself, getting out on only 45, he was at least able to bring up his 8000 Test runs and became only the first Indian to do so. Overall, he was the third batter in the world after Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith to bring up his 8000 runs in his 100th Test. 

 

For Rohit Sharma, who was captaining in his first Test, it has been a real Test as he declared the innings at a time when Ravindra Jadeja was looking to get to 200. He was criticised a lot, but it was later clarified that it was Jadeja himself who wanted Rohit to declare. Him enforcing the follow-on was also a breath of fresh air as far as captaincy is concerned. 

 

India also played a Test at home for the first time without Pujara and Rahne in the Playing 11 and Hanuma Vihari's fifty at number three was an indication that India have really moved on.

Sri Lanka have been a pushover all the way and it's almost a surrender by them in this match. There were not many demons in the pitch. Apart from the first innings dismissal of Dimuth Karunaratne and second innings dismissal of Angelo Mathews, there wasn't even a bowl that was unplayable to lose a wicket to and thus it is a meek-meek surrender from the Lankan Lions and if anybody knows their captain Karunaratne, they know that he wouldn't have liked it one but that his team lost the match in only three days and got out twice in only one and a half days.

And Kumara has finally lost the patience as he hoiks one and is caught at mid-off by Mohammad Shami off Ravichandran Ashwin. Unfortunately, though, Ravindra Jadeja, who led the entire game with his exemplary performance, has missed out on a great milestone of becoming the first player to score 150 plus runs and pick 10 wickets as he end up with only nine wickets to his kitty at the end of the match. He picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings though.
