Team India finished its Hockey World Cup campaign with a 5-2 win over South Africa to finish joint 9th alongside Argentina. For this edition, classification matches were reduced in number by the International Hockey Federation. 

As a result, there were no classification matches for places 5-8th and then the matches for places 9-16th were also reduced in number and joint winners were declared for places, 9th and 13th. As a result, the teams which lost in the classification games for the 9th and 13th positions respectively were jointly given the 11th and 15th position.

Thus, while India finished ninth Jointly with Argentina which beat Wales, Malaysia finished 13th, jointly with France as they beat Japan and Chile respectively in their matches. Earlier in the 9-16th place classification matches, India beat Japan, South Africa defeated Malaysia, Argentina beat Chile and Wales went past France. 

On the final day of the tournament i.e. on Sunday, Australia will face the Netherlands in a bronze medal match while Germany will try and stop Belgium from winning back-to-back World Cups as the two teams meet in the final.

Hockey World Cup, India vs South Africa Live Score: Cassiem scores with the stroke

 

The South Africans will now have something respectable to go out with as they get a penalty stroke after their skipper was fell in the striking circle by the Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and the men in green and white were awarded a penalty stroke. Cassiem Mustaphaa converted it and it ends 5-2 in favour of India.

Sukhjeet Singh has scored a diving goal here. The shot at the goal was from Akashdeep and the goalkeeper played the ball forward with his pads. Sukhjeet, who was running towards the goal already, pushed the ball with his stick towards the goal and got one for India in the 59th minute.
