That was inevitable, everyone saw it coming, India won the first Test match against West Indies by an innings and 272 runs at Rajkot, marking one of their biggest victories in Test cricket against West Indies. With this, they now lead the two-match series 1-0.
Prithvi Shaw, who announced his arrival with maiden Test century in his very first match, was awarded man of the match.
Ravindra Jadeja, who too scored a maiden Test century that too at his home ground, was also a contender for the title as he scalped 4 wickets in the match along with the century.
Almost all Indian batsmen reaped the benefit of lacklustre West Indies bowling, with three centuries in the first innings, including Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant played brilliantly but both missed his centuries by 14 and 8 runs respectively. Lokesh Rahul missed the party as he was sent back for a duck by Gabriel while Ajinkya Rahane put up a good partnership with Kohli in taking India's innings ahead.
For West Indies, Devendra Bishoo grabbed 4 wickets but spent 217 runs for that.
After follow-on was enforced by India, West Indies came to bat with a positive mind but Indian bowlers were in no mood to let the match strech for another day.
Hence, they wrapped up a rather disappointing West Indies side for 196 runs in 50.5 overs in the final session.
Kuldeep Yadav, who picked a 5-wicket haul in the second innings, remained instrumental in India's triumph.
Before Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin (4/37) was the pick of the bowlers in the morning.
West Indies lost 14 wickets on the second day. The target was a far cry considering that wickets kept falling on quick succession.
By tea on the third day, it was clear that the host will wrap up the entire side as they just needed two more wickets.
Keiron Powell was the lone performer for West Indies, scoring 89 runs, but Yadav ended his stint and derailed whatever hope that was left for Windies.
Kuldeep Yadav picked 5 wickets for 57 runs in 14 overs, followed by Ravindra Jadeja who picked 3 for 35 runs. Ashwin picked 2 wickets for 71 runs.
The opposition batsmen seemed to be in a hurry to finish the game. At the time when they needed to hold the ground, they went for reckless shots that proved costly eventually.
The West Indies, resuming their first innings at 94 for six, lasted only an hour and 10 minutes, mainly due to efforts of Roston Chase (53) and Keemo Paul (47) who ended up sharing a 73-run stand.
India started with the spin-pace combination of Kuldeep and Mohammad Shami. Surprisingly, Chase and Paul had little difficulty in picking Kuldeep Yadav and they flexed their muscles for a good few minutes, adding some runs in their dull tally.
Umesh Yadav scalped Paul's wicket, while Ashwin trapped chase. The remaining wickets too fell, in no time, in a usual manner, like a pack of cards.
Prithvi Shaw, who was awarded Man of the Match said, "It was a great win for the team, more happy for the team. Can't imagine my debut like this. Whenever you play international cricket, there's always a challenge. Was looking to play my natural game, like I do in first-class."
Kohli also lauded Prithvi Shaw and Ravindra Jadeja saying he is, "Especially delighted for Prithvi and Jaddu. The way Prithvi dominated on debut was outstanding to see. The guy showed he's different quality, which is why he's pushed into the Indian team so quickly. He just grabs his opportunity with both hands. Exciting to see from a captain's point of view."
The second and final Test will be played in Hyderabad from October 12-16.
For India, the game will be best remembered for the emergence of Prithvi Shaw, who announced his arrival in international cricket with a classy hundred on debut, becoming the youngest from the country to do so in Tests. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja were the other centurions.
