Full-time report: Captain Manuel Lanzarote scored twice from the penalty spot as ATK concluded a 3-2 victory against Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
The match was an end-to-end affair as both teams created chances after chances, some they took, most of them they couldn't.
The first of those chances came in the seventh minute when Auguusto did wonderfully to get inside the box from left and roll it across the face of the goal to the far post for Orlandi who practically had the goal gaping in front of him but his left-footed strike missed the target.
Minutes later, Orlandi got another opportunity when he cut in from right, opened up space for himself and tried to find the far corner with a left-footed strike that sailed a little over the crossbar.
The first goal of the game came in the 15th minute when Jayesh Rane stepped in from the right flank, found himself in space and cracked a right-footed bullet from outside the box that ended up in the back of the net.
Chennai replied in kind within 10 minutes when Thoi Singh scored from the right edge of the box after his first-time shot bulged the bottom-right of the net.
Lanzarote then went close to scoring twice in the next 10 minutes but couldn't keep his shot down on both occassions. He did get his goal though, in the 44th minute, from the penalty spot after Hitesh's shot from inside the ball was handled by Eli Sabia. Lanzarote rolled the ball comfortably into the bottom right corner as the keeper slided the wrong way.
The second half played out in similar vein and Chennai got closer to an equaliser in the 55th minute when Isaac, from the right, found Jeje with a good cross at the far post. However, the goalkeeper made himself big to make the block off Jeje's header and although the ball fell on the path of Thoi Singh, his shot too was blocked.
ATK got their second penalty of the game in the 78th minute when ATK got a corner and Johnson jumped to meet it but Salom made a goal-line save but handled the ball in the process, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Lanzarote again placed a calm, well-placed shot to the same spot as his first penalty kick to make it 3-1 in favour of ATK.
Chennai had the chance to bridge the gap in the 83rd minute when Isaac crossed the ball inside the box for Thoi Singh who just had to pass the ball into the net but instead shot the ball wide. The roles reversed in the 89th minute when Thoi Singh bolted down the right flank and put in a cross for Isaac down the middle who, after making a timely run into the box, did well to finish the move off and score his team's second goal.
The home team could have also got the equaliser in the extra time when Calderon found Thoi Singh inside the box but the goalscorer chipped the goalkeeper and the ball flew a fraction too high of the crossbar.
The win sends ATK to the fifth spot with 15 points from 10 games while Chennaiyin FC are in eighth position with five points from 10 games.
