Full-time report: Jamshedpur FC put three past defending champions Chennaiyin FC who could respond with a solitary goal at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur.
For the first 10 minutes, it was anybody's game, but a 14th-minute strike by Pablo Morgado, when he chested the ball down outside the box and blazed it into the far right corner to make 1-0, changed the complexion of the game.
Jamshedpur piled further misery on the visitors when they were awarded a penalty in the 29th minute when Soosairaj, after some fine work down the right, eyed the far top corner only for Karanjit to parry the ball out. The ball fell kindly for Passi who was about to shoot when Jerry pulled him down, prompting the referee to point to the spot immediately. Calvo took the penalty kick and sent Karanjit the wrong way to score Jamshedpur's second of the night.
For the next 25 minutes, Chennai struggled to even get into the final third and although they played more positively in the dying minutes of the first half, they never really came close to scoring a goal of their own
After the restart, Jamshedpur came close to scoring their third when, in the 52nd minute, a good move found Passi who timed his run to perfection to receive the ball on the left, and with only the goalkeeper to beat, shot straight at Karanjit who parried the ball away.
Chennai had a stroke of luck in the 66th minute when the referee awarded them a penalty kick after Nelson went down inside the box after a challenge from Jairu. After intial hesitation, the referee pointed to the spot. Raphael Augusto stepped up to take the penalty kick and, with a slow Pogba-esque run-up, slotted the ball towards the left of the net.
If that goal was supposed to raise Chennai's hopes, thr third Jamshedpur goal, which came after just three minutes, almost wrapped up the game for the hosts. The goal came after Arques powered his header at the far corner from the corner kick.
The win takes Jamshedpur FC to third spot with 14 points from nine games while Chennaiyin FC are in the ninth spot with four points from eight games.
