Full-time report: A late goal by Brazilian Gerson Vieira gave ATK a 1-0 win against FC Pune City at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata in a match that they thoroughly dominated but were profilgate in front of the goal.
Vieira scored in the 82nd minute when Jayesh Rane put in a teasing cross from inside the box to the centre. Vieira came sprinting from the midfield to head it into the bottom left post to make it 1-0.
The goal was a just reward for ATK who had been knocking at Pune's door all evening long. Many of ATK's chances came through set-pieces too although Lanzarote, who took most of the free-kicks, came close to scoring only once when his effort chipped at the bar before going out.
ATK moved the ball around with relative ease. Especially, Lanzarote and teenager Komal Thatal tormented the Pune defence and drew circles around them.
At the stroke of half-time, ATK came close to scoring when Lanzarote drove a low shot from the right inside the box but the fall rolled just inches away from the far post.
At the start of the second half, the home team picked off from they had left and pushed Pune into their own box. That nearly paid off in the 52nd minute when Lanzarote played a teasing ball from the right over the top of the Pune defence. Santos, who made the run into the box, came agonisingly close to heading it with only the goalkeeper to beat but Kamaljit got to the ball first.
ATK had another good chance in the 76th minute when Lanzarote whipped in a free-kick that's deflected over the top. ATK got a corner from there and there was a scarmble inside the box as the goalkeeper failed to take control of the ball but the shot was blazed over.
Pune had a fine chance of their own in the 79th minute when a nice cross inside the ATK box found Nikhil who mishit his header and the ball rolled out beyond the goal-kick. Three minutes later, Vieira scored the only goal of the game to hand ATK the victory.
The win sends ATK to the sixth position in the points table with 10 points from seven games while Pune sit at the bottom of the table with two points from seven games.
