Full-time report: First half strikes by Kalu Uche and Carlos Salom were enough for ATK to register their first home win at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata despite Chennaiyin FC pulling one goal back.
Kolkata got things going as early as in the third minute when as they benefited from a poor clearance by the Chennai goalkeeper that left Kalu Uche through on goal and he slotted home his effort with great ease to make it 1-0.
The home team's second goal came nearly ten minutes later from a free kick when Lanzarote swung the ball at the far post and John Johnson headed it downwards and towards the opposite post.
Chennai weren't playing bad,as the scoreline would suggest. In fact, they were moving the ball around and patiently building the attack. Their efforts came to fruition in the 17th minute when Carlos Salom pulled one goal back for them. Francis got the ball wide on the right and escaped his marker to float in a cross inside the box where Carlos Salom headed it home to make it 2-1.
The rest of the half was an end-to-end affair although no other goal came.
In the 29th minute, ATK got another great chance when a great ball was played across the six yard box from the right side inside the box. Thatal received the ball at the far post but failed to put the finishing touch.
Chennai too had a fine chance in the 36th minute when, after an elaborate build-up, Orlandi passed the ball into the box with three Chennai players in good position to poke it home but neither Salom nor Thapa can got to the end of the delivery as the ball rolled right across the face of goal and out for a goal-kick.
The second half was a less intense affair with the teams building chances but lacking real teeth in the final third.
Chennai had a chance in the 56th minute when Salom robbed John Johnson inside the box and then put his shot across the face of the goal which narrowly missed the far post. The visitors had another great chance in the 79th minute when Nelson got a free header at the far post but Arindam did well to keep his effort away. Moments later, Issac volleyed back an effort from the right side of the box which Arindam punched away.
The home team too had a chance in the 84th minute when Jayesh Rane skillfully drifted from the byline to the goal line to inside the box, taking on multiple players in the process and squared it for Kalu Uche who chipped from inside the box but his shot went a little higher than what he would have liked.
The win takes Stephen Coppell's ATK to the fourth spot with seven points while Chennai continue their miserable start to the season and are languishing in the ninth spot with just one point from their five games.
