The Indian team finally gave its fans something to cheer for as it thrashed Japan 8-0 in the 9-16th place classification game at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha. India had bowed out of the medal contention after losing 5-4 in the shoot-out of its crossover game against New Zealand. 

For India, Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek scored twice while one goal each was scored by Mandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh and Vivek Sagar Prasad. The Japanese weren’t able to score any. India would now take on South Africa in the 9-10th place finish on January 28th, 2023.
