Gareth Southgate's England pulled in almost a perfect job as they scored six goals against Iran to win their opening match of Group B at Khalifa Stadium. Iran also pulled two back. England had a prolific start to their campaign as Jude Bellingham scored from a perfect header to give them the lead. Bukayo Saka doubled the lead soon and Raheem Sterling scored from a volley to make it 3-0 in favour of Three Lions before the end of the first half.
In the second half, England continued the scoring spree as Saka earned a brace. Mehdi Taremi, the FC Porto striker scored for Iran in the second half to get their first goal of the game. Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish who came off the bench post the first 70 minutes, scored as well for England to make it 6-1. Taremi made it a brace for himself, scoring from the spot after VAR adjudged a shirt pull by the English defence and awarded Iran a penalty. It ended 6-2 at the end in favour of England.

In his pre match conference, Queiroz said, “It is the most important game of our lives, first of all because it is the next one, and the next game is always most important for the life of coaches and players,"
This will be the first time that England will be playing against Iran and also the first time that Queiroz will be managing a side against England. “It is a unique opportunity, even for me, and I have 200-and-something international games. It is the first time I have the opportunity to play against the England national team,” he said.

On the other hand Gareth Southgate, England manager, talked about his team taking the knee. "We've discussed taking the knee and we feel we should. It is what we stand for as a team, and we have done for a long period of time. We believe it is a strong statement that will go around the world, for young people in particular to see that inclusivity is very important,” he said.
