Looking for a better companion than an iPod? Try the Sony PlayStation Portable, which is much more of a complete family stress-buster, recommends Bobby Mukherji. He has his own architecture firm, Bobby Mukherji & Associates, and chooses his gadgets based purely on need.

Is there a gadget you regret spending a lot of money on?
It was a high-end mobile phone I used to carry. Till date, I am figuring out its features. I have switched to the Nokia E50 now. It is simple and user-friendly.

What is the first thing you look for in a gadget?
I don’t like anything high-maintenance or fancy. Since I am out on work all the time, I prefer to take only a mobile phone.

Who’s your one-stop gizmo guru?
I don’t believe in them. I love visiting my local store at Circuit City in Khar. I find all the latest gadgets from across the world at that store. Also, I prefer duty-free shops at Frankfurt and Singapore. They have all the latest models.

What gadget have you been waiting to buy?
SatNav, which is a digital road map, lets you stay on track and even places a wealth of navigational information right at your fingertips. It displays maps and provides the shortest path between two points as well as driving directions on a dynamic map display.

Which gizmo distracts you from your work?
My mobile phone and BlackBerry keep beeping all the time. Though it is important to be connected, it can be distracting while meeting clients. But there is nothing that I feel I can do about it.

Name a gizmo you think is highly overrated.
The iPhone is not that user-friendly, yet it is over-priced. You can find much better Nokia phones than the iPhone, and they are cheaper.

What gadget do you think is completely over-the-top?
Vertu mobile phones. They have a body made of leather, available in four colours, and there are metal options too. It’s a design that is yet to be found in the Nokia constellation. I think it will make laptops obsolete, in the near future.

What gadget would make a better companion than an iPod?
A Sony PlayStation Portable. It helps me connect better with my children. Since it is portable I don’t need to wait for a plug hold, I just need a quiet area to bring it out. It can also be used as an Internet phone service as it has in-built Skype Internet telephony.

How much gadget literature do you actually find yourself reading?
I actually don’t go shopping after research. It’s instinct. I buy on necessity, or else I keep it simple.
