Election times have proved to be good for the mobile handset segment, homegrown mobile company S Spice said on Tuesday.

“The past trends have shown that the mobile segment grows around election times,” S Mobility Ltd associate vice president (operations) Ajay Gupta told Business Standard here.

He added there had been no specific study to ascertain the actual spurt in sales or the actual reason behind the phenomenon. However, he expressed confidence that elections in several northern region states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand were likely to keep this trend alive. Meanwhile, Spice has launched a dual-SIM smart phone ‘Mi 280’ priced at Rs 5,500 in the Uttar Pradesh market. It supports both 2G and 3G platforms. “It is just a coincidence that this launch has coincided with the poll dates in these states,” he added.

Further, Spice is offering an optional bundled offer with the handset, wherein it has tied up with telecom service provider Aircel to offer affordable internet, video calling and call rates. “We will be launching this handset in other states as well,” he informed. Spice has about 15 handsets in its portfolio with price range starting from Rs 1,100 to Rs 15,000. The company claims market share of about 4 per cent in the domestic mobile handset space with UP accounting for almost 10 per cent of its sales.
