Bharti Airtel, one of the leading private telecom companies of India, rolled out its much awaited third generation (3G) services in Assam circle on Friday.
With this, Airtel’s 33 lakh customers in Assam will now be able to enjoy a host of 3G-enabled services, including fast mobile internet access, video streaming, video calling, mobile TV, etc.
Addressing a press conference, George Mathen, chief operating officer of Airtel’s Assam and North East circles, said: “We are bullish in North-East as 3G we expect 3G penetration to exponentially grow in near future in the region. As and when people experience 3G applications, we expect them to switch over to 3G.”
He said that out of total 54 lakh Airtel subscribers in North-East, 30 per cent are GPRS users. He also added that the company had invested close to Rs 80 crore to get 3G licenses for Assam and North-East circles.
Airtel also announced the availability of a host of latest Assamese movie trailers as well as music videos on ‘Airtel Video Talkies’. The company today launched the 3G service in Guwahati city and is in the process of covering other towns and cities of the state soon. Airtel’s 3G service is also available in Shillong, capital of Meghalaya, which falls under North-East circle.
