UK-based BT Global Services had offshored 2,000 jobs from its IT unit to India, which helped it avoid redundancy costs during the first quarter of FY07.

The company, which is the network and IT services arm of British Telecom Group Plc, is also scouting for acquisitions in India, which is believed to be in line with its earlier acquisitions in various countries.

"We have offshored 2,000 jobs from our single IT function to India, and we have reused those 2,000 people within our networked IT services business, providing solutions, thereby avoiding redundancy costs," BT Global Services chief executive officer Andy Green said in a message posted on the company's website.

"The offshoring move is probably one of the best reskilling, retraining and movement programmes that has taken place in our recent history, and is an example of our commitment to retraining and redeployment as we take advantage of the global economy," he added.

BT has a joint venture with automobile major Mahindra & Mahindra " Tech Mahindra (TM). The company is believed to have outsourced its work to Tech Mahindra and other vendors in the country. When contacted, BT officials declined to comment.

The company has also predicted strong growth from India, apart from the US, Japan and China, with revenues from these markets expected to more than double by 2008-09.

BT Global is also scouting for acquisitions in India under its strategy to embrace inorganic opportunities across the world.

Outlining the company's global vision, Green said, "India, China and the US remain interesting from BT Global Services perspective and the company will look at growing its capabilities in these regions. We continue to embrace inorganic opportunities as part of our strategy."

He, however, did not specify the type of companies it was looking at for acquisition in these countries. BT Global Services has earlier acquired small companies such as US network services firm Infonet, Italian company Albacomp and former Reuters venture Radianz.
