CA Technologies, a New York-based information technology management software and solutions company, with $4.35 billion revenues in 2009-10, has planned to hire another 900 personnel for its India Technology Centre (ITC) here over the next three to five years.
The ITC currently has 1,600 personnel of CA’s 13,200 employees globally. It is the single-largest R&D facility for the technology provider, which develops about 30 per cent of the company’s global products.
Sanket Atal was today appointed the centre’s senior vice-president and general manager, co-heading it with the senior vice-president (technology and development), William Bauman, until the latter’s term ends in January 2011.
According to Atal, the ITC is an important part of CA’s global product development and the company is looking at achieving the capacity of the campus (2,500) in the next few years. “The growth of the centre will be in line with the growth of the company. We plan that the expansion (hiring 900 more) will happen in the next three to five years,” Bauman said, adding the company had plenty of options available for further expansion, including entering into a Tier-II city.
According to Amit Chatterjee, managing director (India and Saarc), CA is seeing the 3G telecom roll out in India as a ‘sweet spot’, where the company plays a major role.
“In FY10, defence contributed three per cent to our India sales; telecom, four per cent; government, 28 per cent; banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), 27 per cent and IT/ITeS, 38 per cent. We expect telecom to account for 10 per cent by the end of this financial year, which, however, will eat into some other space,” he said.

CA has earmarked $500 million (Rs 2,350 crore) globally for the current financial year for acquisitions, primarily to bolster its cloud strategy.
The company has a ‘build-and-buy’ strategy (build competencies from within and if there is no value preposition to build, then buy). Since June 2009, CA has made five acquisitions, including Oblicore, 3Tera, nimsoft, NetQoS and 4Base. It is in the process of closing the Arcot Systems deal in India for $200 million (Rs 940 crore) in a couple of months. Arcot has a 115-strong research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore.
“We are open to acquisitions in any market,” said Atal. “CA has been a leader in the IT management-as-a-service space. We are now accelerating our march into cloud.”
