The world is quickly moving towards a phase of connected everything. While a lot of the devices in homes and offices will get connected through the already existing Wi-Fi, a lot of smart devices are also expected to exist outside this realm of connectivity. For mission critical and high bandwidth applications, upcoming 5G networks will power the way, but for low-bandwidth, low-power applications other networks such as Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), LTE-M will lead the way. According to a recent study by Counterpoint Research, the world could have over 5 billion cellular connections dedicated just to IoT devices by 2025 when 2G and 3G will almost be completely  replaced by NB-IoT and 5G.

While emerging markets such as India do offer tremendous scale for such technologies, they will lag behind China which has acquired a massive first-mover advantage. According to the report, the top three IoT cellular connection providers in the world are already Chinese companies and they’re expected to maintain this lead even into 2025.
