Dell chairman Michael Dell on Monday said that India need to formulate a more "concerted" industrial policy around manufacturing other than having a stable tax regime and supportive infrastructure to become a global manufacturing destination.
Replying to a query on what will make the company increase its manufacturing presence in India, the founder of the US-based computer maker said these were some of the elements which make China an attractive destination for manufacturing. Dell attended an interactive session organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Bangalore.
He, however, said that Dell was committed to enhance its manufacturing capability in India. Dell's manufacturing plant in India is located in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.
Talking about India as an R&D destination for the company, Dell said the company is growing its R&D capabilities in India. "Our R&D works in India will continue to grow. We need very specialized skills and a stable and predictable environment for this," he added.
Replying to a query, the Dell chairman said he doesn't see newer gadgets like smartphones and tablets posing a challenge to PCs. "PC will always continue to be the first device whereas tablets will work as an additional device. Not many would like to have internet experience on a small screen," he added.
Dell is the leading PC vendor in India with a market share of 15.5 per cent.
