Recently, a friend upgraded from her ancient Nokia to an Android device. While she's impressed with the performance of her quad-core phone, the phone's short battery life is driving her crazy.
The problem area, we feel, are unnecessary apps or services running in the background. While we've been using Advanced Task Manager to close down these apps for donkey's years now, one app caught our fancy recently. Du Battery Saver 3 for Android provides users a single-button approach to optimise the battery life of their devices.
Available for free, the app analyses a mobile device the first time its run and recommends ways to improve battery life. It also displays the battery runtime, the charge remaining and the time remaining for the battery to drain out, besides the voltage and temperature of the battery on its home screen.
One can choose to act on the recommendations individually, or ask the app to do it for us, by just hitting the 'Optimize' button. The app also shows the time remaining for the battery to be fully charged. Under the 'Charge' tab, the battery charge tracking calendar reminds users when to perform a monthly 'Healthy charge'.
We were able to enhance the battery life of a quad-core Android phone by at least two hours. On another occasion, we were able to keep the phone going for three more hours after the battery's charge had dropped to 20 per cent.
The app's 'Saver' tab has pre-set power-saving modes and one can also set up customised modes. The Pro version, available for $2.99 (Rs 162), gives users access to the 'Smart' panel wherein users can set the app to auto-clear background apps, or switch modes automatically, based on the battery charge or time of day.
