Fujitsu Limited has developed the world's fastest central processing unit, often called the computer's brain, becoming the first Japanese company in 10 years to claim the top spot.

The new CPU, called Venus, runs 2.5 times faster than its rival Intel Corp's product that has taken the lead in speed, according to the officials. In 1999, Fujitsu developed the fastest CPU at the time.

Fujitsu's new CPU may be installed in a next-generation supercomputer which is planned to begin operation at Riken, a science and technology institute in Japan, from next fiscal year, company officials said yesterday.

The product may be utilized in areas such as development of new drugs, which require massive data processing, they said.
