How many cameras does one need to take a picture? Huawei says four. Its competitors — Oppo, Vivo and to some extent Asus — believe that people primarily buy smartphones to take selfies, and the company does not want to take any chances. Their latest device, Honor 9i, has not just two, but four cameras. Both the 16 MP rear camera and the 13 MP front camera is paired with a 2 MP camera, each. The secondary cameras are for bokeh shots or depth effects. There’s also an LED flash at the back and a soft selfie flash in front.

This would have been enough, but Huawei has carved a niche for themselves in the market by relentlessly producing well-performing devices. The smartphone has the look and feel of a premium device. The smooth metal back has a matte finish and the front is a glossy black 2.5D glass screen.  Unfortunately, there is no smart charging option.

The phone runs on its own EMUI 5.1 interface, which is based somewhat on the Android 0.7 Nougat. It also allows you a single-hand mode, which is quite useful on the 18:9 aspect ratio. (This is also the company’s first smartphone with full HD and the 83 per cent screen-to-body ratio is quite impressive.)

Performance wise, the phone is at par with its competitors. It’s powered by octa-core Kirin 659 SoC and a 4GB RAM. For everyday use, it runs quite smoothly. But if you start playing graphic-intensive games, it does lag. There’s nothing groundbreaking about the device, but at this price point, Honor 9i is definitely one of the best devices in the market.
