If there is one area where artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies promise high impact, it is healthcare. From hospital equipment to personal wearables, predictive to preventive healthcare, everything is getting modernised at an exponential scale.

To give a sense, researchers have now developed AI-systems that can predict diseases  which may happen to a patient in the future, based on the person's gene-makeup, lifestyle and environment. Globally, billions of dollars is going into health-tech, giving rise to innovations like precision smart-watches with ECG (electrocardiogram) capabilities, surgical robots that can be operated by a doctor sitting thousands of miles away, 3D printed ancillary organs, and sophisticated genomics research that one day envisages curing diseases like cancer.

Start-ups driving innovations

Currently, engineers and businesses are focussing on the following buckets: Tele-health and e-medicine, connected health platforms, robotics and automation, diagnostics and precision medicine. New-age start-ups are also reshaping the age-old industry with as many as 4,892 having come up in India in the past decade, according to Nasscom. In all, the technologies promise to completely change the face of healthcare.
