The first time someone mentioned the price of the InFocus 50-inch Full HD LED TV, I thought that person was joking. How could one sell a 50-inch panel for just Rs 34,999, I asked. They had to cut down on something, I figured.

InFocus did cut down on something: The TV's "smartness" quotient. But the TV has a lot to offer. While the design won't win awards, it looks smart and the panel is thin. Switching on, one is met with an easy to understand interface. Because the TV doesn't have an OS, it boots up in a jiffy. High-definition (HD) feed from my TATASky box was rendered well.

The remote works well and the sound output is good enough for a medium-sized room. I watched a Blu-ray version of Cars and loved every moment. Next, I connected my hard drive, which had videos in .mkv format. This posed a problem; many videos didn't play, and those that did, didn't have sound.

At Rs 34,999, the TV is for those who want an affordable big screen and are ready to tinker around a bit to add the "smartness" quotient.

Pair it with… iRevo Smart TV
Besides adding an OS to any "unsmart" TV, this tiny box (Rs 8,499 with the Air Mouse) also boasts curated content featuring Hollywood, Bollywood, TV shows and some in regional languages. The Wi-Fi box runs a custom version of Android KitKat. It connects to a TV via HDMI or analogue outputs, sports two USB ports and has internal memory of 8GB. I could play videos off pen drives and my media server on the InFocus TV. The Air Mouse, which looks like the remote of the Apple TV (and connects via the USB W-Fi receiver), has a gyroscope and can be moved to control the screen, which is a bit of a hit and miss.
