The state has already approved a smaller ICT and ESDM cluster in Bengaluru's sister city of Mysuru at the cost of Rs 30 crore. The move should boost Karnataka's electronics manufacturing capabilities, and goes hand in hand with the Central government's 'Make in India' mission.
"The Government of Karnataka is working along with MAIT to take the ICT manufacturing industry forward," said Tanusree Deb Barma, Director - IT & BT, Karnataka Government, in a statement.
At a workshop held to discuss the ease of doing business in the ICT sector on Thursday, members of the Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT) voiced their concerns regarding regulatory issues surrounding land acquisition, e-waste compliance, taxes and procurement.
The central government has envisioned a grand plan of achieving 'net zero imports' in electronics and IT hardware by the year 2020. The Make in India mission is geared towards providing schemes, subsidies and making it easier for companies to manufacture and sell, both in India and abroad.
To improve manufacturing and exports, we need to identify what went wrong in the last decade and address each small and persisting concern. Besides, the gap between Central and State Governments have to be addressed for a business to run easily," said Nitin Kunkolienkar, vice president of MAIT.
