Global software giant Microsoft has been dragged to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) by Delhi-based Singhania and Partners, a law firm.

According to media reports, Singhania and Partners have alleged that Microsoft adopted differential pricing for its OEM and volume licenses and the law firm was forced to buy only volume licenses. Hence, it said, this meant price manipulation by Microsoft.

Which would result in two serious breaches of the Competition Act of 2002, anti-competitive practices and abuse of dominant position, according to the law firm.

It has sought an investigation. And, asked for an enquiry into the overall consumer impact due to these practices.

When asked, a Microsoft spokesperson said: “We don’t comment on any matters that are before government agencies. Microsoft is committed to complying with all relevant laws in each jurisdiction where it does business, including India.”

Sources close to the company alleged said that some time earlier, Microsoft had taken an anti-piracy action against Singhania. However, this could not be confirmed. Despite repeated attempts, Singhania and Partners could not be spoken to.
