Microsoft India on Wednesday said it would target start-ups, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and e-commerce companies to increase subscription bases among business users.
Microsoft India on Wednesday rolled-out the much-awaited Office 2016, the latest addition to its cloud-based subscription service, Office 365. World over, about 1.2 billion people use MS Office for working on a simple word document to running billion- dollar enterprises.
Karan Bajwa, managing director, Microsoft India, said, “With the launch of Office 2016, we endeavour to provide our users with a connected set of apps and services designed for modern working and collaboration which they can access easily and across devices.” Office 365 subscription ranges from Rs 3,299 per annum (for one user) to Rs 33,911 (for Professional Plus).
Microsoft has 1.5 million business users, which it hopes would increase with the new product.
“We have thousands of customers and millions of users on the business side. In India, we are seeing a rise in the number of start-ups and e-commerce websites. More and more small businesses are opting for our subscription services and it is set to rise,” said Tyler Bryson, general manager (marketing and operations).
Push towards mobile
Microsoft added the push would also be towards making the new software popular in the mobile phone segment. According to Microsoft, with a majority of people use mobile devices like mobile phones and tablets, the company is focussing on “reinventing productivity and business processes for the mobile-first, cloud-first world”. The Office 2016 runs on Windows 7 or later Windows OS. It is perfect with Windows 10 and is equipped with built-in intelligence.
“A big area of focus for us is smartphones and tablets. The smartphone market in India is booming and we want to showcase the ease with which users can work on documents across devices using the connected set of apps and services that make collaboration easier,” said Bryson.
Expansion plans
The company is also on track with its India expansion plans. “We would in a few weeks launch cloud services from local data centres. We offer Office 365 as a cloud service globally.
In the next few weeks, we would be launching this from our local centres in Chennai, Pune and Mumbai. These would be connected to our global centres,” he said. With this version, the company hopes to wade off competition that it is facing from players such as Google, which has a software bundle called Drive suite, and softwares such as OpenOffice and LibreOffice, which have on offer several of the same features MS Office has for no cost at all.
Features
The brand new Office 2016 application suite for Windows focuses on cloud and cross-platform compatibility. It has got rid of the annoying assistant ‘Clippy’, which was part of the older version, and now features ‘Tell Me’, which is present in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project, Visio and Access.
Microsoft claims this new features understands the problems users face in a better manner and solves them accordingly. Another addition is the ‘Smart Lookup’ that brings insights from the web right into the documents you are working upon.
