Global telecom handset manufacturer Nokia has said it would replace chargers free of cost for one of its mobile phones, the Nokia 7210, manufactured by its China-based supplier, BYD.

There is a quality problem and the company has started an exchange programme for the charger globally. The replacement would cover chargers with model number AC 3E bought along with Nokia 7210 handsets after June 15 and till August 9.

In August 2007, Nokia had offered replacement of some of its BL-5C batteries after scores of complaints about overheating.

The company said tests had revealed that the plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate. This exposed the charger’s internal components and posed a potential electrical shock hazard if certain internal components of the charger were touched while it was plugged into a live socket.

However, the company said it was not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers. Nokia did not reveal the sales figure for Nokia 7210 sold from June 15 till now. However, the total number of replacements in the Indian market would be very limited, corporate affairs director Ambrish Bakaya said.
