The personal computer (PC) market grew 30% to cross the 4.6 million units mark in 2005-06, according to International Data Centre's (IDC's) India quarterly PC market tracker.HP retained its top slot in the combined notebook and desktop PCs market with a marketshare of 18%.In the overall client PC (notebook PC plus desktop PC) market, the rankings remained unchanged - HP topping the chart with a market share of 18% followed by HCL at 14% and Lenovo (formerly IBM) at 9% in terms of unit shipments with buoyant buying sentiment in the government and medium business segments.In terms of total desktop PC shipments, HCL Infosystems led the market in FY06 followed by HP and Lenovo. In terms of total notebook PC shipments, HP was the top vendor.During the year, the consumer desktops segment grew 33% with commercial desktops growing 15%. Desktop PCs' market as a whole grew 21% and notebook PCs market shot up 168%.The first quarter of 2006 also saw buoyant commercial desktop sales with shipments growing by 14% sequentially and vendors continuing their focussed go-to-market spend on the SME segment strategy. Medium businesses have shown 40% sequential growth in unit shipment terms.Consumer PC market showed new-found maturity evident from the spate of bollywood superstar endorsements in the case of promotions of desktops and notebooks from HP and Lenovo. Notebook PC shipments grew 177% year-on-year despite the re-imposition of 12% excise duty in the budget.
