The third generation (3G) services will be hugely successful in India as there is a great demand from mobile data services in the country, global communication technology major Qualcomm Chairman and Chief Executive Paul Jacobs said today.
"3G has been a success worldwide. It is expected to be a success in India also as people are going to use more data," he said at a conference organised by the company here.
Terming Indian telecom market as 'exciting', Jacobs said, "Worldwide demand for mobile handsets, including high-end phones, is pretty good."
He said India provides a unique opportunity on mobile broadband service as it is a nascent market and the wireless subscribers are growing rapidly.
"By 2010, over 60 per cent of all broadband subscribers will be in the mobile segment. There are 117 million Internet capacity mobile devices in India, which is four times the number of PCs. This shows the opportunity of 3G," he said.
On mobile high-end handset market, he said, "Obviously India is strong, China is strong, the US is fine. We are very excited about the opportunities in Latin America, Africa is up a little bit."
Operators are expected to start 3G service in India by October next year.
