Red Hat, a leading provider of open source to the enterprise, entered into a partnership with Hyderabad-based Lotus Learning Systems Society (LLSS) to promote open source in education in schools.

The initiative is stated to be part of Red Hat's commitment to modernise the Indian education systems by promoting learning through information technology and usage of open source technology as a platform for learning.

LLSS, an organisation operating educational institutions, will deploy Red Hat's open source programmes in its chain of schools.

According LLSS founder K Renuka Raju, the society's partnership with Red Hat is a joint initiative to modernise the Indian education system using open source software.

The open source software model is based on collaboration, community and sharing of intellectual resources and can effectively promote learning and innovation through IT.

Javed Tapia, president of Red Hat Indian Subcontinent, stated that open source would give schools flexibility and control over their IT infrastructure and freedom from expensive licensing schemes.

"Open source also helps in building a participative community of educationists and technologists. It is, therefore, the way forward, for India's education system and we are pleased to partner with a progressive organisation like Lotus Learning Systems Society to take this initiative forward," Tapia stated in a press release here.
