Fed up with my Karmic fate, I just took the easiest escape route – reinstall good ol' Jaunty Jackalope

Ok, first things first – am truly sorry for this delayed post. But have been real BUSY with other things. Anyway, just wanted to tell you what happened...

After my first cribbing about the Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) in mid-November, as promised, I gave it another shot by executing a bare install.

Well guys, it didn't work. It's as simple as that. As before, the CDMA wireless connection worked fine, but my DSL was just not recognised by the Karmic Koala, even after a bare install.

Now I've made it clear before and I will say it again – I like Ubuntu. I was desperate for the easy flowing experience of the Jaunty within the Karmic but didn't want to go through another round of frantic online searches for bug fixes, especially with tons of other pressing assignments.

So I just took the easiest escape route – I reinstalled the previous 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope version itself. As always, it was a cinch. I had the LiveCD lying around, I always do. My parallel Windows OS was not even touched as I just overwrote Karmic on the same disc partition.

Once installed, the Grub menu handled my dual-boot system in the same familiar way and, as expected, my DSL connection came alive. Of course, updates took a long time. The first lot came to over 220 Mb altogether, what with the LiveCD having been made in April this year.

More From This Section

It’s now a fortnight since I’ve reinstalled Jaunty.

All connections — DSL, CDMA — are still up and running. A few Ubuntuzilla commands brought my Firefox up to speed. I resurrected Echofon too for tweets. For sure, my Jaunty will reach its perfect pre-Karmic state by Christmas. It's already back to booting in under 15 secs.

So have I given up on the Karmic? You bet I have. I am happy with my Jaunty and will probably not look for a successor, right till April next year when the next version is due. Point is, like I mentioned at the very beginning of my last post, I would rather have an older OS that works exactly as it is supposed to rather than have the very latest one with a serious bug, at least on my terminal. And my computer is MY castle.

So there's no way in the world I will be pressing that 'Upgrade' button in Jaunty. Period.
